Academic Services
Academic services offered through the Allegan County Michigan Works! office include tutoring, supplemental educational services and scholarship programs for college and occupational training.

Tutoring Services PDF Print E-mail

Tutoring Services in math and reading are available at Allegan Public High School and Fennville Public High School for eligible students.

  • After School Tutoring takes place at each high school for one hour each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Tutors are certified and experienced teachers.
  • Many students have achieved a 1 - 2 grade level improvement in reading or math by the end of the school year   
  • Students receive incentives for attendance and cash awards for improvement.
  • Transportation home is provided at the end of the tutoring session each day.
  • Applications are available from the Career Resource Center and Counseling and Guidance Center at Allegan Public High Schol and Fennville Public High School.

This program is for students from low-income households. Eligibility for the program is determined by using income and family size guidelines provided by the Department of Labor & Economic Growth with the exception of students who possess one of the following additional qualifiers which may also make them eligible:

  • a special Education student with a IEP (Individual Educational Plan)
  • a student who has a documented disability, even if student is not receiving special education classes through his or her school.
  • Homeless, ex:  student living with family friends due to problems in their own family household  
  • Foster child
  • Ward of the Court, incarcerated  

A student may also be eligible if a parent or legal guardian living in same household recieves any of the following:

  • Food stamps  
  • SSI
  • General Assistance

GED Tutoring is also available through the Work First Program at the Allegan Michigan Works! Office for qualified Work First Applications.

Supplemental Education Services Provider PDF Print E-mail

Allegan Area Educational Service Agency through its Michigan Works! service unit is a state approved provider for supplemental educational services under Title I of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  Parents of students eligible to receive supplemental educational services may select a particular provider from the state-approved list.  AAESA and Michigan Works! provide supplemental educational services for mathematics, English, language arts, science, and social studies.

Scholarships for College and Occupational Training PDF Print E-mail

Financial assistance for eligible youth and adults to attend local colleges and trade schools is available.  Possible areas of study are medical assistant, CDL-A truck driving, medical billing and coding, welding, computer support technician and many more.

Programs are for youth (ages 17 - 21); dislocated workers and low-income adults.
